If you're a fan of apple pie, you're going to be an even bigger fan of a recipe for an apple galette. Since they essentially contain the same ingredients, they use a different pie-making technique.
Galettes are fun because they are less stressful and are supposed to have a rustic presentation. Which makes it more fun to prepare and easier to enjoy.
Key Ingredients:
To make these outstanding apple galettes, you will need the following key ingredients:
Apples
I love the mild sweetness and crispness of a Fiji apple. I find they hold up well to baking and retain a great bite after baking.
Light Brown Sugar
I love dark brown sugar, but I love how complementary the light brown sugar plays with the apples and warm spices.
Warm Spices
Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground ginger are the spices that offer all the flavors that I believe make apple pie and the fall season memorable. The cinnamon goes in the crust and the apple filling.
Lemon Juice
The lemon juice serves two purposes: 1) It keeps the apples from browning before baking. 2) It brightens up the flavor of the filling.
Butter
This pie dough recipe is made with all butter. I just use unsalted butter. Salted butter is for the dinner table. Make sure you only use cold butter in your pie dough.
Rum
Apples and rum are flavor pals. I recommend using a white or spice rum and avoiding any coconut flavor rums; however, use whatever rum you like.
Cold Water
Ice water is always needed in a pie crust to form the dough but check my tips and tricks section for more on this topic.
