Cuban Mojito Ingredients
Let’s talk about the key mojito ingredients you’ll need for this recipe.
White Rum
While spiced rum is typically my rum of choice, it overpowers the light and refreshing flavors of lime and mint, so white rum is necessary. For an authentic Cuban mojito, use a Cuban rum like Havana Club.
Sugar Cane
You’ve got to use sugar cane as your sweetener for an authentic mojito. Bonus points if you can find sugar cane sticks to use as garnish. Use a quality granulated sugar you can find locally.
Lime Juice
This adds a fantastic brightness and a tangy flavor that enhances the cocktail. Always opt for fresh lime juice if you can, but you can use the store-bought kind in a pinch.
Fresh Mint
This is the star of the show—it’s not a mojito without mint! Make sure you have enough to muddle some mint for mojitos infused with flavor and then extra to use as garnish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about this Cuban mojito recipe:
The mojito is an iconic rum-based cocktail that originated in Cuba and spread around the world. It’s made with white rum, lime juice, mint, sugar, and club soda. Because of its bright and refreshing flavor profile, the mojito is often regarded as a summertime drink, commonly associated with beaches and tropical weather.
The key difference between a mojito and a Cuban mojito is that a Cuban mojito is specifically made with Cuban rum. You can use any brand, but it’s got to be Cuban. Some great options include Havana Club and Santiago de Cuba.
When you’re making mojitos, you have to use white rum. As an avid dark rum lover myself, this was a tough pill to swallow at first. However, dark rum is too strong in flavor and overpowers the delicate mojito ingredients like fresh mint and lime. To create a well-balanced mojito Cubana, use a quality Cuban white rum.
Sure! If you find mojito mix at the store and want to try it out, go for it. Keep in mind the bottled stuff is never as tasty as making it from scratch with fresh ingredients, but it’s nice when you’re pinched for time. If you’ve never made a true Cuban mojito, I highly recommend trying out the real thing first.
