Homemade fried onion rings are great as toppings on burgers, steaks, grilled food and as a snack. This recipe is awesome and is my go-to onion ring recipe.

    Ingredients

    • 1 large red onion sliced medium
    • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
    • 2 teaspoon salt
    • 2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 2-4 cups flour
    • oil for frying

    Instructions

    • Slice the onions about ¼- ½ inch thick, and break the onions into individual slices in a bowl, mix buttermilk, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Let the onions soak for 30 minutes.
    • In another bowl, mix the remaining salt, black pepper, and garlic powder, and flour together. Dredge the onions in batches in flour and fry in 350-degree oil for 2-3 minutes. Enjoy hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

    Notes

Tips for success: If you cannot find red onions use Spanish yellow onions, if you cannot find them use a white onion. If you cannot not find buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup of milk. You can marinate the onions a day in advance.
