When you grow up in New Orleans, Louisiana, you learn about cocktails.  The festive culture is always celebrating anything and everything we possibly can. What's a party without a decent cocktail?

That's where rum punch cocktail comes in. Primarily influenced by the Jamaican rum punch recipe, our version in New Orleans mirrors it with small tweaks but yields the same great incredible flavors.

I'm going to show you how to make rum punch recipe that the friend nobody trusts to make a cocktail for can follow and impress their guest.

    What is Rum Punch?

Rum punch is a drink made with rum and fruit juices. The drink can be made with any type of rum, but dark rum is usually used. Pineapple juice, orange juice, and lime juice are common juices used in making rum punch. They are garnished with maraschino cherries or skewered citrus slices.

Rum was created in Jamaica and is the spirit of Jamaica. They use rum for various things, like using white rum for headaches, stomach aches, bruises, and cuts. We should pay attention to the originators with a love for rum.

The Jamaican rum punch says, "one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak."

Sour is fresh lime juice, sweet is sugar or simple syrup, strong is rum, and weak is water or fruit punch.

    Key Ingredients

Before you start whipping up this rum punch recipe, look at this list of ingredients to make sure you have everything you need for this amazing rum cocktail.

    Dark Rum

I use equal parts white and dark rum.

    Orange juice

    Fresh-squeezed orange juice is best!

    Pineapple juice

Don't worry about freshly squeezed pineapple juice. Canned pineapple juice is perfect.

    Red grenadine Syrup

This red simple sugar gives our rum punch its signature color.

How To Make Rum Punch Cocktail Recipe?

When you make rum punch at home, it should take you at mos+t 5 minutes to assemble this tasty beverage.

Fill a half-gallon pitcher, a quarter of the way, with ice cubes. Add white rum, dark rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, and red grenadine syrup, and stir a few times. Pour into a tall 8-ounce glass and garnish with an orange slice.

Double the recipe and add to a large pitcher if you're making a gallon. Add orange slices to the pitcher. Cover and pop in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Stir before serving.

    Pro Recipe Tips & Tricks

Here are a few notes I had from making this outstanding rum punch recipe:

    • Be sure to use fresh juices for the best flavor.
    • Fresh orange juice is better than bottled orange juice because it doesn't have added sugars.
    • White or gold rum will be lighter in color and have a slightly different flavor than if made with dark rum.
    • Feel free to use a coconut rum like Malibu instead of regular white rum.
    • You can find red grenadine near the wine section of grocery stores.
    • If you cannot find grenadine, use a red fruit punch or red-colored fruit juice like pomegranate.
    • Garnish with a maraschino cherry for another pop of color. I like to pour the cherry syrup in mine occasionally.
    • Use a blend of lime, orange, and lemon slices for garnishes.
    • Serve rum punch in a mason jar, punch bowl, or hurricane glass.

    FAQs

    Here are the questions

What are the ingredients in a rum punch?

There are many recipes for rum punch, but they all generally consist of white and dark rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine syrup, and lime juice. Some variations also include angostura bitters or water.

The most common rum used is Bacardi or Malibu rum.

    What mixes well with rum?

Several things mix well with rum, especially if it's your spirit of choice. You can mix it with cola, sprite, punch, cakes, whipped cream, pies, cake icings, and fruit juice.

How long does homemade rum punch last?

Homemade rum punch lasts 5 days or until somebody drinks it all.

Can you make a rum punch ahead of time?

Of course, you can! Blend all the ingredients in a pitcher and keep covered in the fridge until you're ready to serve. Rum punch can be made up to two days in advance.

What rum is best for rum punch?

This is a personal choice based on the flavors you appreciate in your rum. White or gold rum has a lighter flavor. In comparison, dark rum has a warm spice and caramel flavor.

My top brands are Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Appleton Estate Signature Blend, and Bumbu XO dark rum. Here's a list to check the top rums available.

Does rum punch need to be refrigerated?

If you plan on drinking your rum punch within the day, there's no need to refrigerate it. Heat will start to affect the drink, so if you're keeping it out, make sure it's in a cool dark place.

How to store leftover rum punch?

Store leftover rum punch covered in the fridge for 5 days or until someone drinks it all. Stir before serving.
